It looks this amazing because of so much fixing and work to repair it and furnish as it should be. None of the original decorations remained but doesn't it look as if they are!!

WBB always kept his other property in Dublin, in St. Stephens Green & was willed to one of his sons.
Interesting to me too was that Rev. Evans of Rostrevor owned about 3 of those St. Stephen Green address's and they are listed in his will.
We came away joking how we had been in Downton Abbey !!

This was the home of Jane's brother, who gave her away in marriage to Edward Evans. I'll have to look but I think Henry Hamilton signed the certificate too. WBB's father in law.
Sorry , I know it gets confusing

The Blue Plaque is a program in the UK and elsewhere to tell people something or someone important, happened at that place or building.

The Scriven Lodge is such a home, in Banbridge, Ireland. As I read family stories about Ireland. They say the Scrivens lived in the "Lodge". I always imagined it was a large building in town. I thought it must be a huge building to house so many people.
It came as a huge surprise to learn it is actually a large country estate farm! The Lodge being the house on it!

My Jane was born in England after the Scrivens left Ireland to send the boys to school. She never lived in the Lodge, but Joseph and his brothers & older sister did.
Here May is again holding an old photo of the Lodge they found. Me enjoying some welcome tea and cakes. Window behind me if front of home. Blue plaque is just outside. Can you see how thick the walls are. Not framed wood. Solid mortar & brick? at least my forearm length thick. You don't feel or hear the wind inside this home.
Irene enjoying her tea & cake. Noel & May Kilpatrick, current owners of the Lodge home & property. So kind to show me the house and upstairs. I came to tears picturing how old family must have bustled about the house. If only I could have done this when any of them were alive.

A good story how Alan actually found me to contact. I had written to the Lodge several years ago. Looking to visit with any current owners and visit with them. A son had however used my letter to quickly jot some information notes on the back of the envelope and it got mislaid. When Alan was working on the book, the Kilpatricks pulled out the envelope and passed it along to him. A good reason to hang onto your old email address's as you never know!
The Church of Ireland, Kilbroney , Ireland. This is where my GGG Grandfather John Evans was for over 40 years. His son, Edward Kentish Evans grew up here with his brother & sisters. There are better pictures online of the Church & Facebook. I regret my visit was too short. I wasn't able to go inside and take pictures. Just to the East, directly across from the Church & behind some business's is the graveyard where he & family are buried. Also Mrs. Elizabeth Ross of Rostrevor and others. A small hidden away graveyard. Very peaceful Alas, I was not able to enter the gates and take pictures.

Across the road and aways up, we spotted the Old SchoolHouse Cafe. The inside decorations were novels and schoolbooks about the walls. I loved it. I had a seafood soup that was delicious and onion rings on the side. Everything was so good and I wish I lived closer to eat there often. The Coke bottle was small compared to what is served here in the USA. It was fun, Also online are more & better pictures than what I post here.

All are light, easy reads, and jammed with stories and pictures. I was there and I swear every cent goes to help Veronica with her brain surgery bills. They are lovely people and you will be glad you have them, for personal purchase, gifts or donations.
Alan Dunlop wrote me a email to say, "Hello". He came across my email from when I was writing more often over to Ireland for my family history. Said it was going to be Josephs 200 birthday anniversary and the area about Banbridge would be celebrating.
I wrote back to say "Hello", yes I am that Katie. Wished everyone across the pond Congratulations on their celebrations and wished them well.
Alan wrote back, would I like to come over and visit in September and share in the local observance. Generously offered to put me up and be a local guide.
How could I say no!
So the plane tickets are ready, passport ready, dug my lil hand size camera out, and have carry-on suitcase and backpack at the ready.
I never in any part of my brain thought to actually ever go over to Ireland. It's going to be like going thru a dream, to see some of our ancestral lands and places in our family stories.
I can't wait to be a total tourist, and fill the camera up with pictures, meet everyone I can, and buy souvenirs.

As you can see from the above picture, Alan has written a book about the Hymn and Joseph. I totally endorse it and like the work he has done. And doing that, is how he came to reach out to me and we started visiting. It's going to be lovely to meet him in person and hear what all he has to tell me about Ireland.
Best Wishes to all, Katie
Hello
Hello
Hello
I am able to get back into my blog. It wouldn't let me login anymore and I was going crazy trying to figure it out. I had really given up and decided I would just open a new one, sort of a 2nd chapter and continue on.
But with the help of my special TECH, Chris, he was able to figure it out and get it to open up for me again.

So much this month;
I missed Joseph M. Scriven birthday on the 10th.
Mom's birthday also same day.
Dad on the 15th
Most Wonderful daughter on East Coast, Carla Dee on 19th

But now on the 20th, my little sister, Susan, born and lost so long ago when she was not even 1. I remember her so often. So sweet a little babe.

Too much to write of but lots of Scriven news. Will have to make a few more entries in the coming days. But for now will share something our family has had for so many years.
Of course I know of the picture everyone sees on the internet of Joseph. I have no information about that picture.

This is our own family picture of him, and as you will see it has been much handled thru the years.

Major General Robert Ross
Of Bladensberg

"The War of 1812"
June 18th, 1812 to February 18, 1815

August 24, 1814 Ross led the British forces into Washington. The White House and other buildings were burned. If you really read the details of this history, Ross actually curtailed the British forces from burning Washington city to the ground.

Only days later on September 12, 1814, Ross will be sniper shot and die at Bladensberg, Maryland.

This is a very brief account but there is much more if your a history buff and interested. Right now the Smithsonian's Nation Gallery has an exhibit of the above portrait on display for the 1814 anniversary rememberance of this. The link just below will take you to it

O.K. that's neat but what's it got to do with my Scriven family?

Major Ross was married to Elizabeth Catherine Glascock, and her Mother was Elizabeth Scriven Glascock.

A lot of writing would be soooooooo confusing, so I will say Jane Bury Scriven Evans & her husband, Edward Kentish Evans, were both 2nd cousins of Elizabeth Scriven Glascock. By their Scriven GrandMothers.

Jane and Edward both were born after Robert Ross dies in 1814, but grew up knowing their Aunt, Mrs. Major General Robert Ross of Bladensberg. Mrs. Ross dies in 1845, the same year as her Aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth Scriven Evans/Crawford.

In London there is wonderful statue to General Ross at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, England. link below

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Robert_Ross_monument,_St_Paul's_Cathedral.jpg

At Rostrevor, Ireland were the Ross family lived on Carlingford Lough there is a beautiful monument to him, link below

http://www.themanwhocapturedwashington.com/rm.html

PHew! That's a lot of history

In England, Ross was hailed as a hero and rewarded by the Crown with the title "Ross of Bladensburg".
If you were an Irish family coming to the United States almost 50 years after 1814, would you tell anyone you were related to the 'Man Who Burned Washington'? I don't think so

So today we remember the day Washington, D.C. burned, August 24.
Altho' the true anniversary is 2 years away in 2014. I'd expect to see a larger rememberance of it then, even over in England and Ireland.
A birthday treat to myself. What a lovely group of happy people.

We met at the Cattlemens' Restaurant in Petaluma, CA..
Started off with the Pledge of Allegiance, which I found very refreshing to stand up and say. There was a roll-call, for which Pilgrim we came from. Fun to see there were 5 others from Governor William Bradford like me.

Surprising to find I sat across the table from 2 sweet ladies, Barbara Millet Webster & her sister, Myrna. Barbara was the best friend of Blanch Evans when they were growing up !!! Blanch - my mother's cousin. Of all the people in the room ~ they are the ones I chatted with right off and shared the dishes with.

Barbara told me her Mayflower ancestor actually had gone overboard during the crossing in a storm. But that he was able to grab some ropes and get back aboard. God! How scary is that and almost unbelievable. That the ship was swaying so much, it leaned so far to the water he could grab ahold and get back aboard. How fantastical
The world isn't just small ~ it's a Mobius strip!

These photos from the website for the
Pilgrim Memorial Monument at Provincetown.
I had never heard of this before and it's on the cover
of The Mayflower Quarterly booklet for this last December 2010. So naturally curious I looked it up online. A great website with loads to look at.
Anyone taking a trip to see Mayflower or Pilgrim stuff, this is 1 place I'd definitely go see. I'm sure it's on the hit list with schools and groups to visit. Philip Marmion, a lovely gentleman in Surrey, who I correspond with, is descended from this 2nd family. Henry was his Grandfather.

Elizabeth was born to not yet Rev., John Brown & Elizabeth Barclay Evans. When Elizabeth was born, her mother died shortly after on 19 June, 1812. I was hoping to have a photo of her stone, alas!

Her father Rev. John Brown, went on to marry again to Anna McCartney in 1815. She also a Scriven descendant. Their line continues down to this day.

The Barclay name comes down from our Quaker ancestor, Robert Barclay 'The Apologist'. Jane's own middle name - Bury - comes down from the Barclay line too.

Happy Trails, KatiebirdKatiebirdhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11551950458501762481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-196447192136740054.post-90549373636588138322010-09-19T18:54:00.000-07:002010-09-19T19:39:26.860-07:00Sentimental Sunday & Video.
.
HOWDEEE ALL,

Most Wonderful youngest daughters BIRTHDAY today,
'Happy Birthday CARLA DEE'. Since she's clear across on the other coast & won't spend day together, gives me time to be on blog.

Spent some time fiddling around with nuts & blots backstage here. More than 1 trial and error and finally figured how to get just the ONE video to show. Several times Youtube wanted to be helpful and add so many more for things I've never looked at. Thanks, Youtube but I just want the 1 for now.

I watched "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", put up by whatsmylife, quite awhile ago. Then I wrote to them. Had several so nice emails with Keith, my new penpal. He was very generous and told me it would be fine to share the video on my blogsite. Just takes me awhile to get chunks of stuff done. This video struck me as putting everything all together in an easy way to follow. & I like the way it begins in Ireland . . . and then moves on.

Watching this as it tells of Joseph's 1st sweetheart drowning in Ireland, Jane would have been in her early teen years. And when Joseph 1st goes to Canada in 1844 on the video, she was about 15. Imagine an older sibling leaving when your that age, and maybe never seeing them again for years. Happens all the time with people going into the military, or school far away. When Joseph returned to Ireland on a visit, 20 years may have passed before Jane saw her big brother again. So many families have these dear strangers.

A down under wonderful "cousin" sent me some letters . . . "treasure". From 1868 & 1877. A younger brother writing to his older brother across the oceans & continents & time - of 50? years. To make touch and reach out to share his memory & feeling of love of family before his life ended. These from a Crawford Uncle of Jane & her husband. Remember Jane and Edward were 1st cousins!

Phew enough chat - enjoy the video

Happy Trails, KatiebirdKatiebirdhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11551950458501762481noreply@blogger.com0
